The TRU Wolfpack women’s soccer team have put together one of the best starts in program history this season and now find themselves in the thick of a Canada West playoff race with four matches remaining in the regular season.

Through ten games the Wolfpack sit at 6-1-3, good for second place in the Pacific Division behind only UBC. It is a remarkable turnaround for a program that finished 5-8-1 a year ago and a testament to the culture head coach Mark Pennington has built around a defensively sound and resilient group.

Last weekend provided the stiffest test of the season when top ranked UBC visited Hillside Stadium. The Wolfpack pushed the Thunderbirds to the limit before falling 2-1 in a very close match. Pennington had nothing but pride for his group afterwards. “UBC is an unbelievably good team, we knew that going in, but I couldn’t be more proud of the group and how they stuck to the plan. UBC is always a threat going forward but we conceded two goals that are a bit disappointing from our end, but we know that good teams can do that to you.”

Now the Wolfpack head back out on the road to face that same UBC side at Thunderbird Stadium on Saturday before travelling to Langley to take on Trinity Western on Sunday. A strong weekend could go a long way toward locking up a Canada West quarter final berth heading into the final stretch of the regular season.
