The TRU Wolfpack women’s soccer team is headed to the U SPORTS National Championship for the first time in program history. The Wolfpack defeated the University of Victoria 2-1 on Thursday night in the Canada West Final Four, winning 4-3 on penalty kicks to book their place at nationals in Vancouver, November 12 to 15.

TRU went down 1-0 before Hannah Saxon pulled them level off a free kick just before halftime. The game stayed tied through regulation and went to penalty kicks, where Floor Ursem came up big. Esi Lufo, Macyn Jolly, Makenna Ford and Sara Kuusimaki all scored in the shootout.

Head coach Mark Pennington was still taking it in after the match. “I have no idea what my emotions are right now, they’re all over the place. UVic made us work. They’re a good team. We’ve tied them twice this year and we always knew it was going to be a tough one. I’m just so proud of the group.”

The Wolfpack now advance to the Canada West championship game against the UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver tonight at 4:00 PM. Regardless of the result, TRU’s season continues at the national championship tournament at Thunderbird Stadium.
