Logan Stankoven is a Stanley Cup champion. The Kamloops native and his Carolina Hurricanes captured hockey's ultimate prize Sunday night in Las Vegas, shutting out the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0 in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final to claim the second championship in franchise history, their first in 20 years.
It was a performance that embodied everything Carolina has been all postseason. Taylor Hall set the tone just 3:47 into the game, beating Carter Hart on a breakaway to give the Hurricanes the early lead. Jackson Blake doubled the advantage in the second period, finishing off a pass from Stankoven in the slot to make it 2-0. Nikolaj Ehlers added an empty-net goal to seal it, while goaltender Brandon Bussi stopped all 22 shots he faced to complete the shutout. The Hurricanes finished the postseason with a stunning 16-3 record.
Stankoven was a key contributor throughout the entire run. The 23-year-old scored in all four games of the opening round sweep against Ottawa and finished the playoffs with 10 goals and 16 points through 19 playoff games, consistently delivering in the biggest moments. Jordan Staal was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.
For Stankoven, the moment carried deep meaning back home. Speaking to Sportsnet after the game he had a message for his city. "Shoutout to everyone back home in Kamloops watching, a lot of people back there have supported me through this journey, can't wait to have the cup back home."
Kamloops should start making plans. The Stanley Cup is coming.
