Kamloops Blazers defenceman Mateo Ferreira is set to represent Canada on the international stage after being named to Canada Red for the 2026 U17 World Challenge.

Hockey Canada announced its 44-player roster on Wednesday, October 14, with Ferreira earning a spot among the country's top under-17 players. The tournament runs November 1-7 in Oakville, Ontario, bringing together teams from Canada, the United States, Sweden, Finland and Czechia.

The Winnipeg-born defenceman has made an impressive start to the 2026-27 Western Hockey League season, leading the Blazers in scoring with two goals and eight assists for 10 points through his first eight games.

Ferreira has also established himself as one of the WHL's top rookie defencemen offensively, providing an early boost to Kamloops' blue line.

The 16-year-old was selected by the Blazers 11th overall in the first round of the 2025 WHL Prospects Draft. He spent last season with the Winnipeg Bruins U18 AAA program, recording 13 goals and 40 assists for 53 points in 45 games.

Ferreira will be joined at the tournament by Kamloops Blazers athletic therapist Taylor Cochrane, who has been selected to work with Canada White.

Canada has won the last three editions of the U17 World Challenge, with Canada Red capturing gold in 2025.
