The WHL season is fast approaching, and the buzz in Kamloops is already building. The Blazers open their home schedule on Saturday, September 20 against the Spokane Chiefs, but that’s just the beginning. This season, some of the most exciting young talent in junior hockey could be playing at Sandman Centre, offering fans in Kamloops the rare chance to see future NHL stars up close.

Gavin McKenna

One of the biggest names that could hit the ice in Kamloops this year is Gavin McKenna of the Medicine Hat Tigers. McKenna dominated the WHL last season, one of the top point leaders and racking up highlight after highlight as a 17-year-old. There’s still a chance he explores the NCAA route, but if he returns, Kamloops fans could witness one of the most electric offensive players junior hockey has seen in years if Medicine Hat makes a trip to Kamloops.

Landon DuPont

Another generational prospect set to make waves is Landon DuPont of the Everett Silvertips. DuPont is entering his 2nd WHL season after an impressive rookie season as the first defencemen ever granted exceptional status in the league’s history. Known for his elite skating and composure with the puck, he’s expected to be a cornerstone on the Everett blue line and a future top pick in the NHL Draft. When the Silvertips come through Kamloops, all eyes will be on the 16-year-old phenom making his mark at the major junior level.

Carter Bear

Also on Everett’s roster is Carter Bear, a powerful winger with serious NHL upside. Bear had a breakout year last season, scoring over 82 points while playing a relentless, high-energy game. He’s tough on the forecheck, dangerous on the rush, and plays with a chip on his shoulder — the kind of player you notice on every shift. His combination of grit and skill makes him one of the toughest matchups in the conference, and he’ll bring that edge when Everett makes their stop in Kamloops. But first, he's excepted to be an early first round pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft.

Radim Mrtka

Seattle’s Radim Mrtka is another name expected to be an early pick in this year's draft . The towering Czech defenseman quickly became a standout last year with his calm decision-making, long reach, and ability to join the rush. At 6’6”, Mrtka brings a physical presence that’s hard to ignore, but it’s his puck-moving ability and offensive instincts that make him one of the most intriguing imports in the WHL.

Roger McQueen

Brandon Wheat Kings centre Roger McQueen is a player built for the next level, projected to potentially go in the Top 5 of this year's draft. Standing at 6’5”, he uses his size and smarts to dominate in all areas of the ice. He’s strong in the faceoff circle, protects the puck well, and can finish with authority. McQueen could visit the Sandman Centre if Brandon happens to make it out to Kamloops.

Other names to look out for are Daxon Rudolph (Prince Albert), Cameron Schmidt (Vancouver), and many more!

With these names potentially making a trip to Kamloops, we are set to see some top prospects next season. And of course, at every Blazers home game, you can catch future stars like Nathan Behm, Tommy Lafrenière, Jordan Keller, and more!
