After months of training and staying ready for the next step, Kamloops goaltender Kendra Woodland is heading to Ontario for a professional tryout with the Ottawa Charge of the PWHL later this year.
It’s a moment she’s been waiting for. Since finishing her standout U SPORTS career with the UNB Reds, Woodland has continued to push herself, staying sharp on the ice and involved in the game in any way she can. From skating with top local talent to contributing to the Hockey Canada National Team Athlete Committee, her focus hasn’t wavered.
“The past year has definitely been a long one, just with not landing on a professional roster and then continuing to put the work in over the winter,” she said. “It’s just important to me that I seize every moment and opportunity that I get with Ottawa and put all of my energy towards giving myself the best opportunity to succeed. It would mean the world to me to gain a roster spot, but I’m more than prepared to put the work in first.”
Now, with a shot at cracking the Ottawa Charge roster, Woodland says she’s excited to finally showcase everything she’s been building toward. “I’ve been itching for an opportunity, so I’m excited to show my work ethic and my passion to play at the next level.”
That passion extends beyond the crease. As a member of Hockey Canada’s National Team Athlete Committee, Woodland has spent the past year working behind the scenes to help grow the women’s game. She sees her tryout in Ottawa not just as a personal opportunity, but as a continuation of that work.
“I’ve just been trying to gain all the experience I can on and off the ice to build my resume and better myself to be able to contribute to any organization I may work with,” she said. “In conjunction with my role on the Hockey Canada National Team Athlete Committee, this is just another step towards the promotion of women in sport and I am so excited to be a part of it in any capacity.”
With training camp on the horizon and a clear focus ahead, Woodland is set to make the most of her chance with the Charge.
