Canada’s hammer throw phenom, Ethan Katzberg, is officially Tokyo bound.

The 23-year-old from Kamloops has punched his ticket to the 2025 World Athletics Championships, set to take place in Japan’s capital from September 13–21. Katzberg secured his spot after a dominant showing at the Canadian Track and Field Championships this past weekend, where he launched a massive throw of 81.33 metres, well beyond the World Athletics qualifying standard.

Katzberg, who trains at the Kamloops Track and Field Club under renowned coach Dylan Armstrong, has been on a tear in recent seasons. After winning gold at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest and becoming Canada’s first ever world champion in the hammer throw, the Kamloops product has continued to raise the bar.

This season, Katzberg has posted some of the top distances globally, including a personal best earlier this summer in Europe. His consistency and form have made him a legitimate podium threat heading into Tokyo, where he’ll face the best hammer throwers on the planet in what’s expected to be one of the most competitive fields in recent memory.
