For nine-year-old Brody, hockey has quickly become more than just a game. After picking up the sport only two years ago, he has completely thrown himself into it — practicing, heading to camps, and watching as many games as he can. But there’s one player he follows more closely than anyone else: John Ludvig.
Brody recently made the trip down to Abbotsford, signs in hand, to watch Ludvig and the Colorado Eagles during the AHL playoffs. For Brody, it wasn’t just any game — it was a chance to see his hockey hero in action. His colorful signs — one proudly reading “My 1st AHL Game! Ludvig = Hockey Hero” — captured just how much the moment meant. In the video below, you can see the moment Brody’s trip was made even more special — Ludvig skated over during warmups, handing Brody a game puck, followed by a smile and a wave that said it all.
Ludvig’s path is one that Brody knows well. Like Brody, Ludvig is from Kamloops. He played for the Kamloops Storm before working his way up to the WHL with the Portland Winterhawks and eventually being drafted by the Florida Panthers in 2019. Now part of the Colorado Avalanche organization, Ludvig’s hard work and resilience have made him a role model for young players chasing their own hockey dreams.
Brody’s connection to Ludvig goes beyond just being a fan. During his first year of hockey, Brody was coached and mentored by Ludvig’s dad, Jan — a bond that made following Johnny’s career even more personal. Brody’s loyalty runs deep; before he watches any other NHL game live, he’s waiting to see what’s next for Ludvig.
Whenever Ludvig’s games are on TV, Brody is tuned in — even if it means staying up past his bedtime with a little help from mom.
For Brody, the trip to Abbotsford wasn’t just about watching a hockey game. It was about seeing a hometown hero and fueling the dream that one day, he might lace up his skates in pro hockey — just like Johnny Ludvig.
