Kamloops has never had a male athlete selected for a Team Canada Ultimate Frisbee U20 squad. That changed when 19-year-old Gage Androlick earned his spot through a national tryout in Burnaby, becoming not only the first from Kamloops but the only athlete from the entire BC Interior on the roster. Every other BC representative on the team comes from the Lower Mainland, making Androlick a flag-bearer for small communities across the province.

This summer, Androlick will compete at the World Flying Disc Federation World Junior Ultimate Championships in Logroño, Spain from July 11 to 18, representing Canada on the international stage.

The journey to get there has been anything but simple. Since earning his spot, Androlick has travelled to Montreal for national training camps and most recently returned from Toronto, where Team Canada won a tournament in their final preparations before heading overseas. The road to Spain has meant flying across the country multiple times, driving to Vancouver every second weekend for regional training and high-level competition, and covering costs for accommodations, gear, coaching fees, and international travel. The estimated total sits at $10,000, all self-funded.

Androlick has credited his development to the Kamloops Ultimate League community and specifically called out coach Duncan Schulz as a major influence in his growth as a player. A multi-sport athlete with a background in volleyball, basketball and soccer, it was ultimate frisbee that ultimately captured him, shaped by coaches who he says cared as much about the person as the player.

To help cover costs, Androlick has launched a GoFundMe and is supported by local fundraising efforts including a bottle drive and a raffle hosted by the Kamloops Ultimate League. To donate and help send Gage to Spain, visit gofundme.com/f/help-send-gage-to-team-canada-worlds-in-spain
