The Kamloops Blazers have added a major piece to their future signing highly regarded American forward J.P. Hurlbert to a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement.
Hurlbert a 17 year old from Allen Texas arrives in Kamloops as one of the top 2008 born prospects in North America. The 6’0” 185 pound forward is known for his blend of size skill and scoring touch a combination that already has him projected as a first round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.
Last season with the US National Team Development Program Hurlbert was a standout. He led the USNTDP’s USHL squad in scoring with 31 points in 34 games a strong showing against older competition. He also added 37 points in 56 games with the U17 National Team finishing third in team scoring and represented Team USA at the World Under 17 Hockey Challenge where he chipped in three assists.
The Blazers selected Hurlbert 20th overall in the 2023 WHL US Prospects Draft but it was not clear if he would ever report. Originally committed to the University of Michigan for the 2026–27 season Hurlbert instead chose the WHL path a decision that sends a strong message about Kamloops’ ability to attract top end talent from across North America.
For Blazers fans his arrival comes at an ideal time. Training camp opens this week before the September 20th home opener against Spokane. Hurlbert is expected to step directly into a prominent role joining a group that already features NHL drafted names.
The signing gives Kamloops not just a short term boost but a potential franchise cornerstone. If his USNTDP numbers are any indication Blazer fans can expect a forward capable of driving offense finishing chances and making an impact every time he touches the puck.
