TRU Men's Soccer Makes a Statement in Week One of Canada West Play

The TRU Wolfpack men's soccer team could not have asked for a better start to their Canada West season. A pair of 1-0 victories at Hillside Stadium to open the weekend has the Wolfpack sitting tied at the top of the Canada West standings alongside UBC after just one week of play.

Thursday's opener came against a UVic Vikes side that entered the match ranked tenth in the nation. New Zealand import Kaelin Nguyen, who spent the summer showcasing his quality with Kamloops United FC, scored the only goal of the match assisted by Lachlan Will. Nguyen has shown throughout his time in Kamloops that he has the ability to finish chances from almost anywhere on the pitch, and he wasted no time making his mark on the Canada West season.

Saturday's match against Fraser Valley produced the same result through a different source. Local product Alesandro Comita, who recently returned to Kamloops after a two-year professional stint in Slovenia, stepped up with the decisive goal to give TRU their second consecutive shutout to open the season.

Between the posts, newcomer Matteo Lamon has been nothing short of impressive. In his first two appearances with the Wolfpack, the goalkeeper has recorded back-to-back clean sheets, giving TRU a rock solid foundation at the back as the season gets underway.

Head coach John Antulov was encouraged by what he saw across both matches. "The guys are showing a lot of resilience which is great. We are still trying to figure things out with a lot of new players, so the fact that we were able to come out with two wins this weekend while still not really hitting our stride is a really good sign."

The Wolfpack now head out on the road for 6 matches before returning home on October 3rd.
