The South Kamloops Titans proved experience still counts in high school football, defending the Chow Cup with a 42–20 victory over Westsyde on Saturday afternoon at Westsyde Secondary.
The Titans came out firing, jumping ahead 35–14 by halftime thanks to a balanced offensive attack and a sharp performance from quarterback Cole Rigler, who threw for 305 yards and four touchdowns, while adding another score on the ground.
Westsyde showed no quit, narrowing the lead to 35–20 midway through the third quarter as the home crowd came alive. But South Kam’s veteran composure was noticed once again, as Lloyd Heggen hauled in a third-quarter touchdown pass that proved to be the dagger. Neither team would find the end zone in the final frame as the Titans closed out the win to retain the Cup for a second straight year.
For South Kam, the victory was a statement from a veteran roster loaded with Grade 12 talent, many of whom are three year varsity starters after being thrust into senior football as Grade 10s back in 2023. Their experience and poise ultimately proved too much for a young, energetic Westsyde squad still finding its stride.
Heggen, who was named Chow Cup Player of the Game for South Kam, delivered in all three phases, scoring one rushing touchdown, one receiving touchdown, and recording an interception on defense.
Despite the loss, Westsyde showed plenty of promise. The scrappy, resilient group forced two turnovers and consistently moved the ball on the ground. Running back Hudson Duhaime was electric, earning Player of the Game honours for Westsyde with a rushing touchdown and an 80-yard kickoff return score that provided a second-quarter spark.
While South Kam celebrates another Chow Cup triumph, Westsyde’s performance hinted at a bright future. With a young core gaining valuable experience, Westsyde could be a team to watch heading into the 2026 season.
