Kamloops Blazers forward J.P. Hurlbert couldn’t have scripted a better Western Hockey League debut.

The 17-year-old electrified the Sandman Centre crowd on Saturday night, scoring a hat trick in his first WHL game as the Blazers took down the Spokane Chiefs 6–4 in their home opener.

Hurlbert wasted little time making his presence felt, striking early to get the Blazers on the board before adding two more tallies. His poise, energy, and finishing touch were on full display, turning heads in his first appearance in the Western Hockey League.

Cooper Moore also netted his first WHL goal in the second period. The Blazers spread the scoring around, with veterans chipping in key goals and steady goaltending standing tall late against a Spokane push. But it was Hurlbert’s breakout performance that stood out, giving fans a glimpse of the young forward’s potential.

With the win, Kamloops starts the 2025/26 season on the right foot, backed by a strong team effort and an unforgettable debut from their newest scoring threat.

The Blazers will continue their season this Friday against the Seattle Thunderbirds.
