Kamloops United FC makes the trip to Nanaimo tomorrow for Leg 1 of the third annual Reid Davidson Charity Shield, carrying the title of defending champions and a hunger for their first points of the 2026 season.
Both the Men's and Women's sides enter the match sitting at 0-2 on the year, making this Shield tie about more than just silverware. A strong result in Nanaimo would provide a spark to get things going this season, and there is no shortage of motivation to find it.
The Reid Davidson Charity Shield has grown into one of the most meaningful fixtures on the Kamloops United calendar. Now in its third year, the annual two-legged series connects two communities that share a piece of the same story. Nanaimo United FC claimed the inaugural Shield, but Kamloops has held it since last year after winning their first title in 2025.
The Shield is named in honour of Reid Davidson, a Kamloops Youth Soccer product who developed through the city's select soccer programs before relocating to Nanaimo to attend Vancouver Island University, where he played at the university and men's club levels. He went on to work with Nanaimo United FC, building deep ties to both communities.
Reid's father, Mike Davidson, spoke to what the Shield means to the family and to the sport "Although Reid started soccer at a young age, he really started developing when Kamloops soccer took him on in the rep program and he was able to learn and develop from that opportunity. He was able to bring those skills to Nanaimo at the university and men's club team levels. So both communities were key to his success and love for the sport. That is why this Charity Shield annual series is so special and important in honouring Reid's memory and legacy."
Leg 1 goes tomorrow in Nanaimo. Leg 2 returns to Kamloops on July 5th at Hillside Stadium, with the aggregate result deciding who lifts the Shield.
