Andrew Hall, who grew up in Kamloops, played sports locally, and graduated from Sahali Secondary, will take on a remarkable challenge on Saturday, September 20, running 100 kilometres around McArthur Island. His run will begin at around 5:30am with the goal of raising money for mental health programs and sports opportunities for kids in marginalized communities.
Hall, now a pharmacy student at UBC and a two-time marathon finisher, says the run is deeply personal. “Mental health is a journey, and shining a light on my own journey and struggles will show that even though others may struggles, they can still do incredible things.”
He has spoken openly about the pressures of school and the isolation that came with it, and says that by being transparent, he hopes others will feel less alone. “Talking about it allows people to relate to it and look inward, see that others are dealing with similar things.”
Seeing others dedicate their athletic pursuits to a cause also influenced him. “Seeing people use their athletic ability to support a cause showed me how powerful it can be, and it motivated me to do the same.”
Training for the 100km has meant long weeks of building mileage, testing nutrition, and finding a rhythm. “I worked up to running more and more each week—60km in a day, running for 9km, walking for 1km, then short rests to avoid fatigue. If you can manage your fuel and fluids with good training and focus on pace, it’s manageable.” He laughs that an unlikely snack has become part of his plan. “Nerd gummy clusters have been my best friend on those long runs, they’re packed with carbs and will definitely be part of this day.”
Funds raised will support both the Canadian Mental Health Association and the Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation. Hall chose these organizations to reflect both his advocacy for accessible mental health supports and his belief that all kids deserve the chance to play sports, regardless of circumstance.
Community members are encouraged to come out to McArthur Island on September 20th to cheer him on or even join for a lap. Donations can be made through Hall’s site: One Person’s Power – Donation Link. or below.
